As a whole the book successfully mixes the cute and funny with a sense of magic and adventure, and I think it could make a lot of middle grade readers happy. The illustrations are all in a sepia tone, giving it an antique look and conveying the emotions and struggles. The story also tackles anxiety through Bea’s POV, I appreciated seeing that in a visual form where its not always explored. Bea and Cad head after him, journeying across the land and encountering many strange and dangerous things. Je ne pense pas nécessairement repenser très souvent à ce roman graphique mais il m’a tout de même fait passer un incroyable moment!

Meanwhile, in darkness, more creatures are stirring, creatures who are after what Bea has and who will follow her anywhere to get it. The artwork is absolutely incredible - so cute and alive and dancing with textures and layers of light.

Before bringing in the construction crew, the Heffleys attempt to do minor maintenance and repairs themselves—during which Greg fails at the work in various slapstick scenes. But when the two arrive home, the Pig Wizard is nowhere to be found, all that is left is the Jar of Endless Flame and a mysterious note. These days Gramps is a little forgetful, actually a lot so, tying string to his fingers as reminders and keeping a wall full of reminder notes. Its not strictly the “Cozy Fantasy” I was expecting, but overall its fun and leaves you interested to see what happens during the sequel.

I just didn't like the way the shapes fit on the page, and how they were supposed to look 3d-ish but it looked strange. Life at the camp isn’t easy, and even with some of the Asahi players playing ball there, it just isn’t the same. Kazu Kibuishi, bestselling author of Amulet Probert’s debut graphic novel is both inventive and familiar, with unique characters in a fresh fantasy world embarking on a classic quest. Kirkus Reviews (starred review) Probert's debut graphic novel is both inventive and familiar, with unique characters in a fresh fantasy world embarking on a classic quest. also really appreciate the way in which probert has very cleverly depicted the anxiety of main character bea through black swirling tendrils that coil around her whenever she feels anxious or panicky.I don't think there's anything bad with trying to read this book, but it wasn't for me, so I don't think I'd recommend it.
