Many thanks to @CeladonBooks and @JaneGoodallInst for an ARC of this book! Now available as of 10.19!** The audio is mesmerizing though I missed out on photos included in the hard copy. Rather than using statistics, she speaks from her heart with stories of her lifelong encounters with animals and people. She’s never ceased in her work. Her foundation is educating and helping all over our world she still travels doing speaking engagements. Dr. Goodall is best known for groundbreaking studies of wild chimpanzees in Gombe Stream National Park, Tanzania, transformative research that continues to this day as the longest-running wild chimpanzee study in the world. Dr. Goodall is the founder of the Jane Goodall Institute, a global conservation, advocacy, animal welfare, research, and youth empowerment organization, including her global Roots & Shoots program. what enables us to keep going in the face of adversity. It is what we desire to happen, but we must be prepared to work hard to make it so."

Yasmin’s smile shone through the dark. And as they talked, it seemed to Sila that Yasmin’s words built a whole city, stone by stone; palm trees and minarets and shining squares. “The swimming pool, Sila. It’s enormous. You should see it!” Edited by Katherine Rundell, with contributions from more than 100 children’s writers and illustratorsWhy not get started with our The Book of Hopes Read My Picture Activity? This encourages children to apply their reading skills to understand what is happening in an illustration. Featuring three beautiful illustrations from The Book of Hopes, this activity is sure to develop children’s comprehension skills in a fun and engaging way!

Looking at the headlines—a global pandemic, the worsening climate crisis, political upheaval—it can be hard to feel optimistic. And yet hope has never been more desperately needed. We go swimming,” said Sila. “I’ll take you to the river tomorrow. It’s better than any pool. We swim with fish.” And snakes, she thought, but decided not to say. I especially like the way in which she gets her message across. She is clever and careful and uses stories to represent her beliefs. Rather than telling people her point, she shows the facts to them through a narrative and attempts to sway the reader (or listener) to her cause when they are presented with simple facts. Education is the key to change. And this can be difficult when the ones you are educating are the cause for problems you are so opposed to. Patience and understanding is the key. Looking at the headlines?the worsening climate crisis, loss of biodiversity, political upheaval?it can be hard to feel optimistic. And yet hope has never been more desperately needed.

We also get a remarkable experience of the partnership that Jane and Doug had working together on this book. Jane Goodall's four main reasons for her hope are the amazing human intellect, the resilience of nature, the power of youth, and the indomitable human spirit. Jane Goodall is a shining beacon of light in a dark world; her words radiate hope, wisdom and integrity: she is nothing less than an inspiration.

I love what Abrams is trying to achieve, but as with The Book of Joy, the format wasn’t entirely successful for me. Reading a book of what’s essentially a conversation felt choppy at times, and it was hard for me to suss out the ultimate thesis let alone the evidence to support it. Lengthy discussions on climate change, deforestation and extinction also were downright depressing! Still, I’m glad to have spent time in the company of Ms. Goodall and applaud the effort to help others look on the sunny side of life. If she’s speaking, I’m listening. Jane has worked so hard to affect change and to educate people; she has dedicated her life to improving the welfare of others through multiple initiatives. Fundamentally, she hopes for a kinder a fairer world and she has changed these hopes into action. The young generation hold the key to change. Jane writes these words as a rallying cry; she wants the young generation to act, as she did; she wants them to work for a better world for all living beings. Jane is also deeply spiritual. She believes, well she knows, that her path was one of purpose and it was chosen for her. She had a calling and she answered it with all her enthusiasm. She simply knew what she must do with her life; she knew what change she could affect if she tried, so that’s precisely what she did: she gave her work her absolute all, and she has done so much good in this world. Third, we must eliminate corruption, for without good governance and honest leadership, we cannot work together to solve our enormous social and environmental challenges."Doug Abrams shared with us his grief from when his father died - during his time working with Jane on this conversational project.
