She also has a tendency to not credit her artists on later seasons of the show and on the Château's social media accounts, which leaves a bad taste in my mouth. They are self-proclaimed time poor, and I understand the urgency of having the castle ready for the wedding deadline, but I find it sad they slaved away constantly on a building in their new home country and rarely took time away to smell the roses and interact with people. A Year in the Chateau takes a light-hearted look at a group of friends who decide to pool their resources and who find themselves the owners of a dilapidated chateau in Northern France. It is a tribute to their spirit of adventure, their 'can do' attitude and their strength of character in refusing to be daunted. We’ve been enjoying Christmas and a traditional Boxing Day in Sydney at my sister’s beautiful new home feasting on food, watching the cricket and then start of Sydney to Hobart yacht race before dashing to the cliffs to watch the racing yachts sail past.

A lovely book, full of stories that did not feature in the first TV series of Escape to the Chateau. That being said I was fascinated and had everyone I know watching this couple renovate what was essentially a fairytale castle in my mind. They appear to be just themselves throughout the tv show and it’s the same on the audio book, warts and all which I love. Too much detail in some places (bathing and caring for children and food consumed) and not enough in others. By the end of the story I envied the friendships and the possibilities that being brave enough to follow your dream could create.

Irreverent, witty and emotionally charged, Long's rollercoaster ride zones in with exquisite precision and perception on the dreams, despairs and dilemmas of all middle-aged women getting ready to say a final goodbye to their youth and looking forward to new beginnings. They worked through it, supported each other, and created a fantasy world for themselves and anyone lucky enough to have an encounter at the Chateau. Seeing this book brought back all of those real life magic feelings and I couldn't get through it fast enough, reading all of the behind-the-scenes things, from their point of view was fascinating and honestly I want more. Located in the bustling heart of Saint-German-des-Prés, just behind Église de Saint-Germain-des-Prés and the famous cafes Les Deux Magots and le Bonaparte cafe, this tiny place is a photographer’s delight. The street is narrow, cobbled and oozes charm and looks amazing on an overcast day with the warm indoor lights glowing from the cafes and restaurants. The chateau would fight back at times but the mistakes that were made were learnt from and the couple’s collaborative effort achieved positive results. In 2015 they bought a derelict chateau in the Loire valley and became the subjects of the hugely popular Channel 4 hit Escape to the Chateau. Nature is described at its best and the couple literally plonk you right in the surroundings with them. When Nicola's husband, Dominic, retires they decide not to spend their days finding hobbies to fill the time until Countdown is on channel 4. Reading the nitty gritty of renovating a château had me enthralled and learning about window glazing and kitchen benches was great hands-on advice. A Year at the Château follows Dick and Angel from when they first moved to France in the depths of winter and found bedrooms infested with flies, turrets inhabited by bats, the wind rattling through cracked windows, and just one working toilet, which flushed into the moat, through to the monumental efforts that went into readying The Château for their beautiful wedding and incredibly special first Christmas.

the only way to seat eighty people in the orangery was to have five tables, each of sixteen, equally spaced.
