Description

Writing against recent trends in publishing, Mabey challenges us to “have more respect for nature’s own narratives”. Now 37, he has written an extraordinary memoir of his experiences: a literary sensation in France, and already translated into 11 languages.

I enjoyed learning about the lives of roe deer, but would have liked to have learned more about the author’s thoughts and motivations. In Deer Man, Delorme describes becoming a creature of the forest, working to blend in with the deer and witnessing their births and deaths, loves and battles, ostracism and friendship. In Deer Man, Delorme describes becoming a creature of the forest, working to blend in with the deer, not disrupt them, and living without a tent or sleeping bag.In his sensuous and moving memoir, Geoffroy forms a powerful connection with roe deer while living alone in the woods for seven years. I revelled at the author’s descriptions of the woods, and admired his desire to know every part of it.

Alone in the forest with no tent, no shelter and not even a sleeping bag or blanket is an exercise in pure survival, and so Geoffroy follows the deer's behaviour closely. A moment later, he lifts his head slightly, yawns, looking at me, then rests it against my thigh, near my hand. In the winters of 2015, Jacob took a break from his busy and noisy life by visiting his parents in America.

The author took me on a seven year journey into the woods of Normandy and showed me what it was like to live among Roe Deer.

Part of the book's description reads: Deer Man is a moving story of what it’s like to be an outsider and how forming connections with the natural world can help us feel less alone. At one point in the book, Delorme admits that he doesn't take photos of animals he doesn't personally know, or doesn't have a connection with, because he likes to see - through the camera lens - the expression in the animal's eyes.
