Description

Marooned in a sprawling farmhouse in Norfolk, teenage Linda Radlett feels herself destined for greater things. Her story is told by Fran, the cousin who had been sent to grow up with the Radletts when it became clear that her care-free mother couldn’t give her the stable childhood she needed. The daughter of a former rock ‘n roll hell-raiser and the mellow woman who tamed him, Linda grew up in blissful seclusion from the wider world in a sprawling estate in the Surrey countryside alongside her rabble of siblings and favourite cousin, Fran.

The Things That We Lost is a beautifully tender exploration of family, loss and how far we will go to protect the ones we love. Tony Kroesig is the son of a UKIP-supporting Lord Bamford type, and Christian Talbot is a self-obsessed OE minor novelist with a fine line in poverty tourism.Husband two, anti-capitalist Christian (nicknamed “posh Trot” by Uncle Matthew), meanwhile, is an Old Etonian who puts about a myth that he grew up on a housing estate in Doncaster. By making Mr Radlett a working-class rock star rather than moneyed aristocrat, Knight gives herself the opportunity to rib the upper classes through his frequently irate, defiantly egotistical lens.

To do the book justice, it's nicely written and zips along at a fine pace, which it what you'd expect from such an insubstantial piece of fluff. They also have their own codes, words, abbreviations – which as a mother of 4, and with our own family ‘things’, I totally understand. It’s all an absolute hoot and Knight seems to be especially enjoying herself when it comes to Uncle Matthew, a man “of extreme and simple emotions” who weeps at the sight of particularly tragic old dogs and delights in trolling people on Instagram (“CLOSE YOUR MOUTH WHEN YOU SMILE”).Eventually Linda does find her way out from the bosom of her deeply eccentric extended family, and moves to London to become a model.
