The Bat was originally published in Norway in 1997 where it became a smash hit and won the Glass Key Award for Best Nordic Crime Novel. We weren't allowed to draw the line ourselves, and with Harry through his drunken stupor, maybe we had some unreliable narrator bits and it was lost. Not to spoil things, but Harry gets into a barfight and isn’t reamed out by his superiors for doing so, which felt a bit unrealistic.

With the bread crumbs you could pick up, instead of chunks of bread flying at you like in this book.

Harry’s fish-out-of-water experience in a foreign land and the odd-couple pairing with a mismatched partner makes for pleasurable reading all the way to the end.

First of all, they take our people’s pride, and when it’s gone they’re scared to death of treading on it. The Bat is a worthy introduction to Scandinavian noir for the uninitiated, even if this first Harry Hole novel is set in Australia. He wonders, is Otto toying with him, admitting to being the killer, or is Otto trying to tell Harry that he knows who the killer is?All the reports list Harry as the passenger, and he is restricted from telling anyone the truth that eats away at him. Harry is informed that it appears she was raped before she was killed, but given the condition they found her there is no evidence to be found.

The hope was to nail Evans on some drug charges, and to scalp information from him while he was detained. Within minutes of seeing her behind the bar, Hole can’t resist asking out a Swedish woman who worked with the dead Norwegian, having admired her long red hair, willowy back (?After three years military service he attended business school and formed the band Di Derre ('Them There'). Otto comes back on stage, the audience is assuaged, but Harry still has a pit in his stomach forming. The other thing that’s noteworthy about this first novel is that it is not set on Harry’s home turf of Oslo, Norway. Harry learns of Andrews history as a boxer when he takes Harry to see a boxing match of the Jim Chivers boxing team.

However, the passenger seat was so full of papers, cassettes and general rubbish that Harry squeezed into the back.

I first read The redbreast and the following ones translated and published in Spain, but I got this one in English and wasn't disappointed at all.
